s we strive to become leaders for others, crucial questions arise: “How can we support one another during tough times?” and “How can I teach and motivate others?”
Youth L.O.V.E, a program initiated by AFCLA (Alberta Fil-Can Leaders Association) to organize events for the youthful side of the community across the Alberta province, has contributed to clarify the answers to these questions.
During the pleasant weekend of May 31-June 1 in Action Dignity vicinity, Calgary, AFCLA, Youth L.O.V.E (Leaders Organizing Volunteer Engagement) and along with the support of F.R.I.E.N.D.S (Filipinos Rising for Inclusion and Equity to Nurture Democracy) hosted its first leadership training and workshop for the youth who aspire to make changes with not only their rooted communities but also strengthening connections with nearby areas – paving the way for a promising future and opening up numerous opportunities to support those who wish to be heard.
Over the course of the weekend, the fruitful training featured a variety of guest speakers who shared their views on the qualities of effective leadership and the various forms of leading. Additionally, there were activities designed to assist participants in discovering the leadership style that suited them most effectively. Southern Alberta was notably represented during the workshop, as youth delegates from Lethbridge were active participants.
Genesis L., the leader of Youth L.O.V.E., expressed his heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the training. “Thank you to all of our participants, volunteers, and speakers,” he also mentions that, “We’ve been having an amazing time and it’s all because of all your support and we’re excited to do our part in the community.”
Marichu A., advisor for AFCLA, emphasized the significance of conducting these leadership training sessions, stating, “It’s very important to develop young leaders because they will be the future leaders to help us solve the issues of our community.”
Following the initial successful training, Youth L.O.V.E. has commenced the development of the framework for their next event. The Youth Camp is scheduled for the end of July in Red Deer, Alta. This event aims to involve more than 100 young individuals between the ages of 16 to 20, and is designed to showcase the cultural activities of the Philippines, including its arts, dances, and sports.
