The TCAD (Taber Community Against Drugs) annual Wellness Walk expanded its scope, and thus the Taber Recreation Board gave a slight bump to its approved Community Grant Program application.

In the fall of 2017, council approved a waiver of $245 for TCAD for the 2018 Wellness Walk which will run on Oct. 11.

TCAD changed the format at its event and requested an additional $92.25 in funding to the application. The additional cost stemmed from renting out three meeting rooms for 1.5 hours each at a cost of $20.50 per hour.

A total of $24,146.21 of the $25,000 allotted for the grant program for 2018 has already been committed.

Recently, the Taber Food Bank turned back its allotment due to the cancellation of its spaghetti supper which left a small amount of funding left available for the request.

“This is a program that happens in conjunction with the Taber Police, TCAD, victim services…there’s a multitude of people involved with this,” said Aline Holmen, director of recreation for the Town of Taber. “They are having breakout sessions with the kids. They felt it was time to change the format because it wasn’t as successful as they wanted it to be. They are bringing in several guest speakers as opposed to one guest speaker, and it sounds like the kids can pick which session they want and rotate through. They wanted to try something different. It’s not a huge cost.”

By incorporating experiential learning opportunities for students, Wellness Walk organizers are hoping to assist students in not only hearing about different coping skills through its speakers, but actually getting to learn and practice different skills through the breakout sessions.

The Taber Recreation Board approved unanimously the addition of $92.25 to the previous Community Grant Program application approval for the Taber Community Against Drugs Wellness Walk to accommodate its expanded format in reaching out to kids.
