It was a blowout win that served as a warm up to a pivotal game this week.
McCoy offered little resistance to the W.R. Myers Rebels football team as the Rebels dominated at home, 69-0 at Ken McDonald Memorial Sports Park on Friday night.
“McCoy came out in a pass-happy, spread formation that they basically didn’t deviate from all night. Our secondary was lights out in coverage like usual, and our pass rush really didn’t give that quarterback a lot of time to throw. He was pressured, hit as he threw, and sacked consistently all game long,” said Jason Jensen, defensive co-ordinator for the W.R. Myers Rebels football team.
“One of our big goals is to win the turnover battle, and we did a great job of that. Johnny Tams came up with a pair of interceptions, and Brady Garner was able to scoop up a fumble and return it for a touchdown. To go with those, Wyatt Jensen was able to block a punt and recover it in the endzone for another score. Not that the offence needed the help this time in their own dominant effort, but it always thrills me to put a couple of defensive majors on the board. This game gave us the opportunity to get our less experienced players a lot of quality playing time against a conventional offence, which is going to come in handy down the stretch, as we play our other two divisional opponents, and get into playoffs.”
It will be night and day between opponents for this Thursday, as Willow Creek is on the slate.
“Willow Creek is definitely our biggest rival, and this time we have to go to Claresholm to meet them. Not only is this game going to be pivotal in deciding the Dawson Trophy winner, it will decide which of us gets a bye into the zone final, along with the right to host, and which will have to go through Pincher Creek to get to that game,” said Jensen. “With Willow ranked number two in the provincial Tier IV standings, and us ranked number three, the whole province has taken notice of this game. Football Alberta has named it the provincial Game of the Week. Hopefully, we can march in there and get the job done.”
Game time goes Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Claresholm.
