A dominating team effort from both sides of the ball resulted in a 43-0 shutout of Pincher Creek on Friday on the road by the W.R. Myers Rebels football team.
“It was a good game for us to get a lot of guys in. We were able to pitch the shutout which is fantastic, and we did it with us using a lot of different guys. They only had one significant drive that ended when Quinn Bailey intercepted a ball in the endzone,” said Adam Hughes, head coach of the W.R. Myers Rebels football team. “Other than that, they were totally stuffed out.”
The interception was one of five on the day the Rebels forced, along with two fumble recoveries.
“Right from the get go, we attacked with a multi-directional, blitz-heavy scheme, and it proved tough for them to handle,” said Jason Jensen, defensive co-ordinator for the W.R. Myers Rebels football team. “We had 16 different players record tackles which shows it was a really total team effort on defence. As a defensive co-ordinator, it’s always nice to get the shutout, but in this case, it’s actually quite important. Pincher is a division opponent, and the first tie breaker for the Jerry Dawson Trophy is points allowed.”
That team effort was showcased on offence as well, as in a balanced attack that saw five different players record 70-yards plus, including Kadin Reynolds registering 176 yards.
“That balance was nice to see. In years past, we had one or two guys carrying the ball for 100-yards plus,” said Hughes. “Having that many guys over 70 yards means we are spreading the ball out and when you have that many playmakers, it’s really hard to defend. We can hopefully build on that.”
“This game was also good in that we were able to get our reinforcements in for a lot of quality time. Our first two games were tight enough that we weren’t making many unnecessary substitutions. Our younger guys really needed a game like this to get some seasoning. We definitely liked what we saw out of them, and it’s good to know you can rely on your bench when a player goes down,” added Jensen.
The Rebels now prepare to host McCoy High School out of Medicine Hat on Friday at 7 p.m. at Ken McDonald Memorial Sports Park.
