Two Taberites returned from the National ITF Championships in Trois-Rivières, Quebec this past weekend, coming back with medals in taekwon-do in the process.
Grace Holowiski won gold in sparring (a fight that was showcased in front of the masters on Saturday night), gold in power breaking, and gold on specialty breaking. Torrance Gedny won gold in sparring and silver in specialty breaking.
The feat of a trio of gold gave Holowiski the title of Top Overall Junior Female Athlete at the championships.
“This event was important for seeding points for selection next year at the national championships in Quebec. If athletes have enough points, they will try out for Team Canada heading to Ireland in 2017,” said Brandi Miyanaga, who trains both competitors at Merritt’s Ultimate Taekwon-Do. “I have been working with both students and preparing them for these events. They have a very intense training schedule that I have designed to help them meet their goals. We will be attending some seminars in Calgary with Master Norman, Prince George, with two athlete/instructors from Quebec. I’m excited to see their progress in the next few months.”
