W.R. Myers Rebels football team is going into its zone championship game with plenty of momentum after a 52-0 dismantling of the High River Mustangs at Ken McDonald Memorial Sports Park on Thursday night.
“The Mustangs are a young team. In a couple of years, that’s going to be a really good program. They have good coaches there and they’re going to turn their program around,” said Adam Hughes, head coach of the W.R. Myers Rebels football team. “It’s nice to have that kind of success, and the boys enjoyed it.”
Touchdowns were spread around with Evan Harkness (2), Bradley Marsden (2), Tate Platt (2), and David Peters (1) each hitting paydirt.
Defensively, the Mustangs were able to move the ball a little bit in the first half before adjustments were made, and High River was corralled quickly.
“They were able to pass on us a little bit. They had some success passing to the running backs,” said Hughes. “At half-time, we made a few tweaks and that closed everything up. It was a game where we were able to work players in different spots.”
The Rebels now prepare for its zone championship game against Willow Creek Cobras from Claresholm. The Rebels host the game at 7 p.m. on Friday at Ken McDonald Memorial Sports Park.
“We have some game film on them. They do a lot of things similar to what we do. They are a fast team and they’ve had a lot of success,” said Hughes. “They have been in the provincial championship game the last two years. They have a really good program. They are always the team that stands in the way of a provincial run. We are excited for a chance to end that. They have won the last seven zone championships in that run.”
