It was pure domination for the W.R. Myers Rebels girls rugby team as the squad hosted a Vulcan opposition that is still finding its footing in its rebuild last Thursday.
“Both teams won quite comfortably at the end of the day,” said Andrew Llewelyn-Jones, a co-coach with the W.R. Myers Rebels girls rugby team.
The Rebels varsity girls rugby team earned a 67-7 win, settling down after Vulcan scored the first major of the game.
“Vulcan has a very good player on their team who is a definite standout. She just got a hold of the ball to start the game and outpaced our team, and scored under the post. She is very quick,” said Llewelyn-Jones. “But the Rebels came back strongly and shut her down as best they could the rest of the game and came away as big winners.”
The junior varsity Rebels upended Vulcan 57-12.
“You are going to get a couple of lopsided games during the season. In the case of Vulcan, they are rebuilding their program. They didn’t have representation last year because they didn’t have a coach,” said Llewelyn-Jones. “They are in the process of rebuilding and it shows. The JVs are definitely developmental and the senior varsity has a few good players, but the rest were inexperienced.”
The Rebels were expected to be in a dogfight when they hosted Raymond on Tuesday with results unavailable at press time.
“That will be a tough game because already with the results, they’ve shown in two big teams in F.P. Walshe and LCI, they won both of those games very comfortably. It will be a big test for the seniors,” said Llewelyn-Jones. “At the JV level, I think Raymond is undefeated as well.”
In league play, the W.R. Myers Rebels girls rugby team hits the road with a match against Matthew Halton on May 5 in Pincher Creek. The May 13 weekend will see the Rebels with a taste of tournament play with junior varsity at the University of Lethbridge and the varsity squad at Ross Shepard.
