W.R. Myers Rebels girls rugby program earned a split in its two matches on the road against LCI Clippers last Wednesday.

The varsity girls Rebels rugby team suffered a 22-3 defeat.

“It was a hard-fought game in which LCI scored a couple of late tries to make the score a little more lopsided which didn’t reflect the game,” said Andrew Llewelyn-Jones, co-coach of the W.R. Myers Rebels girls rugby team.

“It was only 5-0 LCI at the half. It was a very close game until the end. The girls fought well, but lacked a little bit of finish. The score was a little exaggerated and it didn’t truly reflect the game. At the end of the day, the senior girls have a few things to work on, but LCI is in a different tier in Tier I, and Myers is in Tier II.”

W.R. Myers Rebels junior varsity girls rugby team blew out LCI in a 55-0 shutout.

“It was a good try-scoring game for the JVs. We ran well, we tackled well, when LCI did mount a little bit of pressure, we shut them down. They didn’t really get close to our try line at any time” said Llewelyn-Jones. “We scored nine tries.”

Lopsided scores can lead to lazy habits in which Llewelyn-Jones stressed the Rebels try and avoid, no matter the score on the scoreboard.

“We scored a try fairly early on and I told the girls to not lose your focus and keep scoring if you can. In weekly practices, we focus on one aspect of play, so I like to see if nothing else, the girls work on that aspect for the next game so they can develop their skill level. It was a good game.”

Rebels played F.P. Walshe at home on Tuesday with results unavailable at press time. Rebels travel to Medicine Hat on Thursday and on Saturday there is a junior-varsity, end-of-the season tournament at W.R. Myers field.

“We have four boys teams playing and six girls teams playing. We are probably going to lay them all on Myers field and spread them out throughout the day,” said Llewelyn-Jones.
