W.R. Myers Rebels varsity girls basketball team made it to the championship final of the Hunting Hills tournament this past weekend, before falling to the Magrath Pandas 78-59 to take the silver.

“We came out very flat in this game, Magrath really wanted to prove a point and came out firing on all cylinders. We shot under 15 per cent from the field and Magrath put up their third highest points of the season,” said Kenney Wood, head coach of the W.R. Myers Rebels varsity girls basketball team. “We got behind by four at the end of one and were behind by 10 at the half. The third quarter we completely fell apart and couldn’t score. We now have three losses on the season and have definitely learned more in those three losses that we have in any of our wins.”

Hayley Lepard had the double-double of 16 points to go with 14 rebounds. Sadie Lund pulled in 10 boards and Katessa Gross had five steals to go with five rebounds.

The Rebels’ run featured the team being able to beat two 4A teams including Notre Dame 63-42 in its opener.

Natalie Hoyt poured in 22 points and Gross added 15 points. Taylor Moser had 10 points and Lund grabbed 10 rebounds. Paige Wood and Chelsea Hubble both had five rebounds. Tiffany Olsen had five steals.

“We came out very strong and basically had the game well in hand by the end of the first quarter. We worked a lot on the offence and were able to get everyone involved,” said Wood.

The Rebels made the championship final by dispatching Lindsay Thurber 82-47.

Hoyt hit for 20 points and registered six steals. Lund had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Millay Johnson had 10 points t go with seven rebounds. Moser also registered double digits by chipping in 10 points.

“We had played this team last year in this tourney (beat them) and had heard that they really wanted a rematch. I don’t think they will be too excited another rematch,” said Wood. “We shot quite well and were able to get a lot of transition points as well. Once again the whole team was involved and everyone got on the score board.”

W.R. Myers Rebels varsity girls basketball team play its last home game of the season on Friday night against Catholic Central. Junior varsity goes at 6 p.m. with varsity to follow at 8 p.m. The team then hits on the road on Saturday for a game against Raymond Comets.

“We continue to learn and improve, and want to be at our best for zones and provincials,” said Wood.
