Regular season nearing end for Golden Suns

The Elite Alberta Hockey League (AEHL) is close to the end of the regular season, and Taber Golden Suns teams were hoping to add a few points this past weekend.

U11

For the U11 squad, it was a three-game weekend that saw them on the road for all. Friday night was a matchup against the Central Alberta Selects, and the Suns would jump ahead early 3-0 in the first. They’d continue to pour it on over the last two periods en route to a 7-1 win. Rhett Schooten had four assists, Heston Honess contributed with a hat trick, Madex Howg and Carter Wiest had a goal and an assist each, Parker Avison and Madden Nakamura hit the back of the net, and Bentley Dyck and Blake Bryan notched an assist each. Tove Morgan collected the win in net with 31 saves on 32 shots.

Saturday’s action took the U11s out to Sylvan Lake for a date against the Lakers. In a high-scoring game, it was Taber who was able to carve out a 7-6 win. Bryan scored two and added three assists, Schooten had a goal and two assists, Avison and Honess had a goal and an assist, Wyatt Foote and Nakamura each scored, and Dyck had an assist. Remington Jardine got the start in net for Taber and made 20 stops on 26 shots.

The Suns returned to the ice on Sunday for a road game against Red Deer. Like Friday’s game, Taber would score early and often as they routed Red Deer 11-1. Bryan had two goals and two assists. Howg scored and added two assists, Honess had three assists, Walker Perlich scored twice, and Liam Beckie and Avison each had a goal and an assist. Foote and Schooten each had a goal, and Timber Davey, Madden, and Dyck hit the score sheet with an assist. Morgan was back between the pipes and made 25 saves on 26 shots.

This coming weekend is a two-pack for the Suns as they head out to Vauxhall for both games. On Saturday, they play the Okotoks Oilers at 11:15 a.m., and then on Sunday, there is a game against Lethbridge Hurricanes Red at 1 p.m. The Suns currently sit in first place in the Plains Conference with a 21-1-0 record and 42 points.

U13

Only one game was on the U13’s schedule this past weekend as they took on Foothills as the road team on Sunday. In a tough contest, the Bisons would score a goal in the third to secure a 3-2 victory. Lincoln Braun and Justin Siemens had the goals, while Burke Williams, Peyton Honess, and Levi Hanf each notched an assist. Lance Leusink was in net and made 34 saves on 37 shots.

This weekend is a pair of home games in Vauxhall for the U13 Suns. On Saturday, the Airdrie Lightning come to town for a 4:15 p.m. puck drop. Sunday sees a game against the Wheatland Warriors at 3:15 p.m. The Suns sit in fifth place out of six in the South Division with an 8-16-3 record and 19 points.

U15

It was a back-to-back against the East Kootenay Avalanche this past weekend for the U15 Suns. In Saturday’s game, it was the Avalanche who were able to skate away with a 5-1 win over Taber. Rudy Wojszel had the lone goal, assisted by Ryder Nault. Drew Tame was in net and made 29 saves on 34 shots for Taber.

Sunday was a reverse as Taber was able to shutout the Avs 3-0 thanks to a 34-save performance from Talen Sarathlal. Hudson Stenger had two assists, Blaze Wenzel, Travis Jackson, and Wojszel had the goals, and Ryder Nielsen notched a single assist.

The Suns now have an off weekend from AEHL as they prepare to end the regular season with a three-game homestand in Vauxhall. On Feb. 20, they welcome Okotoks with a 6:45 p.m. game, and then Saturday is a matchup against Medicine Hat at 12:45 p.m. The weekend ends with a 6 p.m. puck drop against the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Sunday. Taber currently sits in last place in the South Division with a 6-23-2 record and 14 points.

U18

Two games came and went for the U18 squad as they looked to add four points. On Friday, the team was in Vauxhall as they played against the Okotoks Oilers. Taber dominated in the shots department and was able to secure a 5-3 win. Foster Weatherhead and Heston Hansen each scored and had two assists, Nixen Miller hit the back of the net twice, Lincoln Weiss had a pair of assists, Landon McEwen scored, and Breton Villemaire and Blake Smith had an assist each. Dakota Hurst clinched the win with 21 saves on 24 shots.

Sunday was another road trip to Calgary as the Suns played the CBHA Hawks. The Suns would fall back 3-0 across the first two periods and were unable to bridge the gap as they fell 3-1. Loki Thacker had the only Taber goal, while Jack Lukacs made 30 stops on 33 shots in net.

The U18s have one upcoming game this weekend as they play host to the Wheatland Warriors on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Suns are currently third of seven teams in the South Division with a 13-12-4 record and 30 points.
