Highlights from the MD of Taber’s Jan. 27 council meeting

The Municipal District (MD) of Taber council convened on January 27, 2026, to discuss a range of topics impacting the community. Here are the key highlights from the meeting.

The meeting began with the adoption of the January 13 minutes, which included a heartfelt acknowledgment from Reeve Tamara Miyanaga. She expressed gratitude to MD of Taber staff for their dedication and contributions throughout the year. Special recognition was given to employees for their years of service and outstanding achievements, celebrated during the MD of Taber Christmas Party.

Years of Service Awards:

• 5 Years: Raymond Dam, Carley Grant, Lace Lutz

• 10 Years: Dawson Cooper, Sheldon Haynes, Corry Moline

• 15 Years: Marion Wilson

• 25 Years: Sherry Crombez

Recognition Awards:

• Positivity Award: Zecia Ortega and Pedro Fehr

• Mentorship Award: Brian Peers and Jorden Holst

• Eureka Award: Martin Bozek and the RMLIT Team (Lace Lutz, Jazlyn Pedersen, Marion Wilson, Dean Parker, Zecia Ortega)

• Collaborator Award: Wendy Bergen and Craig Ambler

• Subtle Star Award: Carley Grant and Drew Joblonkay

Council approved a motion to draft a Guarantee or Loan Bylaw to support the Society for Taber Arts and Recreation in securing a $500,000 loan. Council also approved a $10,000 donation to the Trail 77 Association to assist with trail maintenance expenses. This funding aligns with the MD of Taber’s commitment to supporting community organizations and recreational activities.

A motion was passed to auction off the former CPO/Ag Services building located at 6302 – 52nd Street in Taber. The purchaser will be responsible for the building’s removal and associated components.

The meeting moved to new business, which included the monthly report from the Taber RCMP.

During December of 2025, two criminal charges were laid, and four theft complaints were reported, two of which were resolved when missing items were located. The detachment had participated in Checkstops and the National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day, removing one impaired driver from the road.

Year-End Crime Statistics for 2025 showed:

• Break & Enters decreased by 32 per cent compared to 2024.

• Theft of Motor Vehicles saw a slight decrease of 6.3 per cent.

• Theft Under $5,000 increased by 25 per cent, with six more occurrences than the previous year.

• Overall, there were increases in Persons Crime offences (+32), Property Crime offences (+6), and Total Criminal Code offences (+41).

Later in the meeting, council reviewed two letters of note, including one from Minister of Municipal Affairs, Dan Williams. The Minister expressed interest in the MD of Taber’s discussions on farmland assessment, the Agri-Food Corridor, and municipal airport improvements. He encouraged the MD to submit proposals and shared his support for ongoing initiatives.

The second was from the Taber Food Bank Society: The organization thanked the MD of Taber for its support of the Protein Program, which helped provide locally sourced beef to families in need. Since October 2025, the program has supported 556 families with food hampers, highlighting the importance of community partnerships in addressing food security.
