CAHL regular season kicks off

Taber Oil Kings were back on the ice this past weekend as all teams saw the start of the regular season for the Central Alberta Hockey League.

U11 Tier 3

The Tier 3 Oil Kings started off the regular season with a pair of home games. The first was on Saturday when they took on Irvine. Thanks to a big five-goal second period, Taber skated to a 9-3 victory. Dreyton Kinniburgh, Ethan Ausmus, and Vaughn Emelson all scored and added two assists. Reed Campbell and Dirk Devries each scored twice, Jackson Brown had a goal and an assist, Jace Perini hit the back of the net, and Seth Denny notched an assist. Avi Rex made 11 saves on 14 shots in the Taber net.

Sunday was a matchup against Foremost that resulted in a close game. Foremost would score four goals in the second and were able to hold on for a 6-4 win. Ausmus had a goal and an assist, Denny, Emelson, and McKinley Wiest scored, and Holden Geerligs, Weston Valgardson, and Devries all had an assist in the game. Rex was back in net and made 11 saves on 16 shots.

Next weekend sees the team on the road as they head to Brooks on Sunday morning for an 11:15 a.m. puck drop.

U11 Tier 5

For the Tier 5 squad, it was a home and an away game to start the season. Saturday saw them at home to take on Duchess. Heading tied at 2-2 into the third period, Duchess would score a pair of unanswered goals to take the game 4-2. Joel Visser led the way with a goal and an assist, while Sebastian Woordman-Reimer had the other Taber goal. Zayne Cody made 15 saves on 19 shots between the pipes.

The last game of the weekend saw Taber head out on the road to take on Brooks Blue. When the final buzzer sounded, neither team was able to find a game-winner as it ended 5-5. Mya Braun and Cooper Feldbusch scored twice, while Jovian Beebe also hit the back of the net, and Woordman-Reimer collected an assist. Cody was back in net and made 24 saves on 29 shots.

Next weekend is another two games for the U11 Tier 5 Oil Kings. On Saturday morning, the Oil Kings are back home to take on Brooks Red at 10:30 a.m. On Sunday, they head out on the road to take on Redcliff White. Puck drop is set for 11:45 a.m.

U13

A two-game homestead was how the U13 Oil Kings began their CAHL campaign. Saturday saw Coaldale come to town, and the first period saw Taber fall back 5-0. They attempted a comeback, but it was short as they lost 6-2. Ryden Baker and Nate Antosko scored the goals, and Cage Holcek collected an assist. Rhett Wright got the start in net and made 30 saves on 36 shots.

The following day, Taber matched up with Magrath. In a back-and-forth game, neither side was able to pull away as the game ended tied 4-4. Holcek had two of the Taber goals, while Baker and Luke Engwer each scored a goal and had an assist. Chason Sekura collected two assists, and Hudson Ilczynski, Arlo Van Geest, Kendall Clement, and Kalum Turcato had an assist. Kohen Ilczynski made 27 saves on 31 shots in the Taber net.

The U13s look for their first win of the regular season this coming weekend when they hit the road for two games. On Saturday, they take on Foothills at 12:45 p.m. The weekend ends with a game against Cardston on Sunday at 1 p.m.

U15

The U15 Oil Kings shot out of a cannon to begin the regular season. Saturday’s home game against Kainai saw the team score seven goals in the third period en route to a 9-5 win. Mitchell Kimoto scored four goals and added an assist, Blake Untereiner had a hat trick and an assist, and Baron Stang scored and had two assists. Oliver Turnbull scored and had an assist, and Samuel Hathaway, Wyatt Valgardson, Lennon Kover, and Luca Nielsen all had an assist. Aidyn Arnel-Derksen was the starting goalie and made 28 saves on 33 shots.

The Oil Kings kept rolling on Sunday when they scored four straight goals against Lethbridge Red and took the game 4-1. Hathaway and Kimoto had two goals each, while Untereiner, Stang, Jaxson Tychsen, Benjamin Williamson, and Bentley Howg all notched an assist. Arnel-Derksen was back in net, and the goalie was rock solid with a 47-save win.

Next action comes on Friday when the Oil Kings head out on the road to take on Lethbridge White at 6:45 p.m. Saturday sees the team back on the road to play High Country. Puck drop is set for 2:45 p.m.

U18

The U18 Oil Kings were at home for two games this past weekend. Friday night saw the team line up against Kainai, and thanks to a five-goal second period, they were able to walk away with a 7-4 victory. Lincoln Wiebe had a hat trick and three assists, while Ethan Volk had a goal and three assists. Julian Woordman scored twice, Adelyn Williamson had two assists, Jaxson Badura hit the back of the net, and Jenner Workman and Kellon Schalk had an assist each. Avery Remfert made the start between the pipes and made 26 saves on 30 shots.

Saturday saw the Oil Kings back at home as they took on Lethbridge Red. The second and third periods saw tons of goals go in for Taber as they took it 9-3. Wiebe scored four more goals and added an assist, Woordman had two goals and three assists, Konnor Wiebe had two goals and two assists, Schalk had three assists, and Skylar Jensen notched two assists. Carter Kerkhoff scored a goal, and Badura had an assist in the win. Ty Dorin collected the win in net with 37 saves on 40 shots.

Next weekend sees one game on tap as the Oil Kings hit the road to take on Pincher Creek. Game time is 3:45 p.m. on Saturday.
