CAHL wraps up tiering round

This weekend saw the Taber Oil Kings wrap up the Central Alberta Hockey League’s (CAHL) tiering round as the teams now turn their focus to the regular season.

U11 Tier 3

The U11 Tier 3 squad had two final games for the tiering round. First up on Saturday was a home date against Vulcan. Taber would take a 5-0 lead over the first two periods and cruise to a 7-3 win. Seth Denny notched a hat trick, Ethan Ausmus scored twice and added an assist, Jace Perini scored and had an assist, Holden Geerligs and Vaughn Emelson contributed with two assists each, Jackson Brown hit the back of the net, and Reed Campbell and Dreyton Kinniburgh all had an assist. Avi Rex collected the win in net with a 17-save performance.

Sunday saw the team depart for Crowsnest Pass, and this time it was the opposition who scored five goals over the first two periods. Taber battled hard but was unable to close the gap as they fell 7-4. Denny had another two goals and an assist, Perini scored and had an assist, Dirk Devries notched two assists, and Ausmus scored. Rex was back in net and made 15 saves on 22 shots.

U11 Tier 5

The U11 Tier 5 team had both of their games this past weekend on the road. On Saturday, they visited Pincher Creek. In a back-and-forth battle, it was Taber who was able to carve out a 7-6 win. Mya Braun had a hat trick and an assist, Cooper Feldbusch, Sebastian Woordman-Reimer, and Rory Nagai all had a goal and an assist, Aspynn Hart-Jensen had a goal and an assist, Joel Visser had a pair of assists, and Finnley Olson contributed with an assist. Zayne Cody was in net and made 32 saves on 38 shots.

The last game of the weekend saw the Oil Kings in Picture Butte. Unfortunately, this one was all Blades as Taber fell 11-2. Feldbusch had both Taber goals, and Cody made 33 saves on 44 shots in net.

U13

It was an eventful weekend for the U13 team as they started on the road Saturday with a game against Medicine Hat. Taber would fall back early, and Medicine Hat’s offence was relentless as they skated to a 13-1 victory. Arlo Van Geest had the lone Taber goal, assisted by Luke Engwer. Rhett Wright made 29 saves on 42 shots in the Taber crease.

Sunday’s action saw the team return home to face off against Raymond. Thanks to a huge seven-goal second period, Taber walked away with an 11-4 win. Ryden Baker had seven of the Taber goals, while Cage Holcek scored twice and had an assist, Engwer had three assists, and Cooper Ross had a pair of assists. Chason Sekura and Van Geest hit the back of the net once, and Madden Wright, Kalum Turcato, Kendall Clement, Hudson Ilczynski, and Nate Antosko all had an assist. Kohen Ilczynski got the start in net and made 23 saves on 27 shots.

U15

It was two games at home for the U15 squad as they welcomed in Lethbridge Red on Friday night. Taber would score a late goal in the third period to clinch a 5-4 win. Logan Rabusic scored and had three assists, Mitchell Kimoto scored twice and added an assist, Baron Stang scored and had two assists, Jaxson Tychsen hit the back of the net, and Wyatt Valgardson, Bentley Howg, and Luca Nielsen all had an assist.

Aidyn Arnel-Derksen started for Taber and made 50 saves on 54 shots.

Saturday’s game was less successful for Taber as they fell 15-3 against Picture Butte. Kimoto added another two goals and an assist, Rabusic had a goal and an assist, Samuel Hathaway had two assists, and Nielsen had an assist. Arnel-Derksen was back in net and made 39 saves on 54 shots.

U18

The U18 Oil Kings had a pair of games on tap this past weekend. First up was a home game against Irvine on Saturday night. Taber found themselves in a 4-0 deficit in the third period, and they were unable to climb their way out as they lost 6-2. Carter Kerkhoff notched two assists, Ethan Volk and Julian Woordman had the goals, and Skylar Jensen notched an assist. Ty Dorin was the starting netminder and was busy with 74 saves on 80 shots.

Sunday saw the team in Fort Macleod, and it was not the Oil Kings’ day as they fell 16-1. Lincoln Wiebe had the lone Taber goal while Brodyn Sutka made 52 saves on 68 shots in the Taber net.
