The 2021-25 council term has now concluded and nominees can focus on gathering support for a few weeks before the municipal election on Oct. 20. While some new names are sure to land on the ballot, most of the current council are asking for a public vote of confidence to secure another term in office.

After serving her first term on Taber town council, Monica McLean is aspiring to another. Her demeanour in council meetings is that of a good listener who will express her ideas with deference and respect. Her skill set and commitment to community well-being helped shape her decision to run for council again.

“I decided to run for council again because I genuinely care about the future of Taber and want to continue building on the work that’s been started,” she said in an email. “Over the past term, I’ve brought strong organizational and problem-solving skills, along with a balanced perspective as both a professional and a parent raising a young family here.”

She said she was proud to be part of decisions that supported community growth and improved local services, such as investing in recreational infrastructure and enhancing family-friendly amenities.

“I’ve also valued supporting initiatives that strengthen economic development and improve the long-term sustainability of our town. Each of these decisions reflected community priorities and will have lasting benefits,” she said.

The upcoming term will no doubt bring both challenges and more opportunities for progress, and McLean has a realistic perspective.

“One of the biggest challenges is balancing growth with affordability, ensuring that our infrastructure and services keep pace while being mindful of taxpayers,” she said. “I also see opportunities to strengthen economic development, attract more businesses, and create opportunities for young families so they can build their futures here.”

She sees Taber’s potential for continuing growth – as a safe, vibrant, and welcoming community with many available amenities and opportunities for its residents.

McLean’s positive approach to civic duty was apparent when she said, “What I enjoy most about serving on council is having the opportunity to listen to residents, bring their voices forward, and help shape decisions that directly impact our community’s quality of life.
