The M.D. of Taber has approved a combined $300,000 in funding from the Capital Recreation Reserves for two key recreation projects.

To review capital recreation funding options, the M.D. of Taber held a Committee of the Whole meeting to evaluate several projects. Following detailed discussions, the committee forwarded two recommendations to council, and administration presented corresponding resolutions in support of these projects.

The first recommendation concerns the Vauxhall Baseball Academy Recreation Indoor Facility Capital Project, which received $200,000 from the Capital Recreation Reserves. The committee identified this reserve as the most appropriate funding source.

The second recommendation involves the Trail 77 Singletrack Association Partnership Program, which sought up to $100,000 in matching funds from the same reserve. Although initially presented as an “up to” matching amount, the committee recommended a firm $100,000 contribution.

Founded in 2006, the Vauxhall Baseball Academy is developing an indoor turf facility featuring a multipurpose area, sports courts, and a fitness workout space. The academy’s presentation highlighted the facility’s role in serving future generations and fostering community pride and unity. The project has already secured $1,070,000 through local fundraising, provincial grants, and donations beyond southern Alberta.

The Trail 77 Singletrack Association is seeking funding to complete its regional trail network. The association aims to raise $250,000 to help build new trails from its master plan.

Both projects were initially introduced at a council meeting and later discussed in greater detail during the Committee of the Whole session. Reeve Tamara Miyanaga noted the extensive conversations that shaped the recommendations.

Before the council vote, CAO Arlos Crofts stressed the importance of contribution or grant agreements, which ensure receiving organizations formally acknowledge municipal sponsorship and maintain transparency regarding the use of taxpayer funds.

Miyanaga echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the projects’ importance. “The M.D. of Taber recognizes the value these groups contribute to recreation opportunities for our residents. This funding is crucial, and we acknowledge much of their success is driven by dedicated volunteers,” she said.

Following the discussion, council approved $200,000 for the Vauxhall Baseball Academy Indoor Facility and $100,000 to support the Trail 77 Singletrack Association Partnership Program in completing its master plan capital project.
