With the M.D. of Taber facing a municipal election in October 2025, the M.D. of Taber Council has been contemplating their future in politics.
Tamara Miyanaga, who currently serves as the Reeve for the M.D. of Taber, has elected to put her name forward for the 2025 municipal election.
“It is my honour to serve Division 4 and the residents of the M.D. of Taber, and with the support of my family and my nominators, I am going to put my name forward for the 2025 election,” said Reeve Miyanaga. “I would like to continue implementation of a recently completed Traffic Study to improve our road network, ensure strong volunteer emergency service, develop recreation, optimize municipal land use for all residents, and continue refining the budget with alternate funding sources, to improve services and maintain taxes.”
Councillor John Turcato from Division 2 has publicly expressed his intention to run in the municipal election, Reeve Miyanaga says, and no other incumbents have shared their intention for Division 1 Councillor and past Reeve Merrill Harris, however, has chosen to not seek re-election in October.
“Division 1 Councillor and past Reeve Merrill Harris has passionately served the municipality and its residents for three terms, totaling 11 years,” said Reeve Miyanaga. “Besides Merrill’s leadership in Council Chambers, he has provided clarity and direction as the FCSS Chair, co-chair of the Southern Alberta Drainage Project and numerous other committees, including four years as Chair of the Southwest Mayors and Reeves.”
Reeve Miyanaga invites those who have a love for the municipality, have a willingness to serve on committees, and a desire to improve the roads, hamlets, recreation, and emergency services to consider letting their name stand for the election and says that current Councilors and Chief Administrative Officer Arlos Crofts can help clarify the exceptions and time commitments involved with such a responsibility and that voter, candidate, and election work opportunities can be found at https://www.mdtaber.ab.ca/p/2025-election. In addition to that, Reeve Miyanaga says, the Government of Alberta has a website with additional election details: https://www.alberta.ca/municipal-elections.aspx, and there is also a video series for candidates: https://www.mdtaber.ab.ca/p/for-candidates.
Wendy Noble, who is the M.D. of Taber Returning Officer, can also answer questions specific to nomination and the election, Reeve Miyanaga says, and Noble can be contacted at returningofficer@mdtaber.ab.ca or 403.892.9075.
“It is a rewarding responsibility to serve the MD of Taber,” said Reeve Miyanaga. “We need councilors who will ensure fiscal responsibility, while providing services and opportunities that continue M.D. of Taber as a world class agriculture economy, that is open to development and a great place to raise a family.”
