The St. Mary’s Celtics hosted the 1A Boys Basketball Provincial Championships this past weekend. Twelve teams from across the province travelled to compete for the 1A Boys Championship. It was a great weekend of basketball.
St. Mary’s boys who were ranked 5th going into the tournament faced off against 12th ranked E.H. Walter from Paradise Valley first. In front of a packed house St. Mary’s prevailed and won 79-64.
In the quarterfinal match Thursday evening St. Mary’s played Worsley Central. It was a hard fought battle but the Celtics lost 92-72.
St. Mary’s then had a bounce back Friday where they played Father Gerard Redmond School from Hinton and won 66-64 to advance to the B Consolation Final. Once again St. Mary’s was packed and it was an excellent game. Despite a 29 point effort from St. Mary’s Rex Bell, the Celtics lost 72-69 to Gobind Sarvar School of Calgary.
Coaldale Christian were matched up against Taber Christian in the 1A boys Championship Final Saturday night. Behind a 29 point effort from Owen Senneker and 23 points from Dmitri Veenendaal Coaldale Christian triumphed over Taber Christian 83-54. Despite the loss Sebastian Hoekstra and Maddox Kooiker had 12 and 11 points respectively.
For Coaldale Christian this is their 4th 1A Boys Championship in a row which is quite the feat.
St. Mary’s is very proud of their school community who stepped up to help run this event. We would like to thank all of our local sponsors and volunteers who made this a very successful tournament. A great way to finish off the basketball season.
