Fresh from winning the Liberal leadership, to succeeding Justin Trudeau as prime minister, and now back on the campaign trail seeking the votes of Canadians in a federal election, few would deny life has been busy recently for Mark Carney.
While attempting to present himself as an abrupt change and breath of fresh air for the Liberal Party and Canada, Taber-Warner MLA Grant Hunter isn’t buying it.
“I’m expecting more of the same. I am excited about the fact that he’s finally figured out that the carbon tax is not a good idea, that consumer carbon taxes are making us uncompetitive with other jurisdictions like China and the United States. So he finally figured that out, and even Steven Guilbeault (Minister of Canadian Heritage) has figured that out, from what I understand. So that’s exciting.”
The carbon tax received the “axe” from Carney before calling a federal election on Sunday, and Hunter was positive about this development.
“That’s great, that’ll be a fantastic win for Albertans and Canadians. We won’t have to pay so much. Look at our utility bills. How much is going towards carbon tax on our utility bills? It is unbelievable. You pay more in carbon tax than you do in the actual cost of the natural gas, which is terrible. So I’m glad that he’s doing that.”
As far as Hunter is concerned, though, when it comes to the former Liberal government he’s convinced a tiger can’t change its stripes.
“But look, I would be shocked if the Liberal government was able to pivot to a more common-sense governance model. They’ve been drinking this, I would say, radical-left Kool-Aid for far too long. I’d be surprised if they actually come back to the center, but you can hope.”
Wrapping up his viewpoint on Carney, Hunter offered an endorsement of Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.
“Let’s get someone in there that is going to negotiate a new CUSMA (Canada – United States – Mexico Agreement) deal in free trade, and someone that is voting for Pierre Poilievre, I think that he’s a very bright individual and very capable of leading us through these tumultuous times.”
