The holiday season is here, and Taber Titans Charity is hoping businesses and the community at large will be in the giving spirit.
The Titans’ 5-on-5 charity hockey tournament is fast approaching on Jan. 17-19 at the Taber Arena/Community Centre, and once again the board of directors is canvassing the community for donations to its event, including its prize table.
“We have received some pretty good prizes these last two years from the business community and it adds some fun to the tournament. You get a chance to win something while watching some great hockey,” said Danny Weiss, treasurer for Taber Titans Charity.
To date, the Titans have helped 40 kids with individual inquiries, fulfilling their sports/recreation dreams. That is on top of mass registration initiatives in the youngest age categories for hockey, soccer, baseball and lacrosse..
“With the impact the organization has had in its brief time, it shows how generous Taber and the M.D. has been to the Titans, and their belief no child should be denied a chance at recreation due to a tight financial situation,” said Taylor Gouw, president of Taber Titans Charity. “Children are finding their way at those youngest age categories in finding out what they love and are passionate about. Families can find out if those sports are for them without it being a burden on the budget.”
Name a sport and the Titans have e helped sponsor it for a family be it hockey, football, baseball, volleyball, soccer, dance, gymnastics, golf, bowling, lacrosse, basketball etc.
It has also included buying the necessary equipment to play the sport for the child, along with registrations to various sports camps in the community.
The Titans have dabbled in the social safety net of other organizations as well including Safe Haven and the Taber Food Bank.
The Titans have also helped with recreation opportunities for the disabled, and infrastructure projects like the pump track.
“Every donation we recieve for our hockey tournament and other initiatives gets funneled back into the local community in an area of sports need in the spirit of Dr. Beckie the organization was founded upon,” said Kyle Davidson, secretary for Taber Titans Charity.
The Titans are ever so grateful for the donations they recieve for their hockey tournament in January… not only in cash and prizes, but also sweat equity. Community members have stepped up in numbers to help with the various tasks be it selling 50-50/raffle tickets, tending bar in the beer gardens, or running the score clock.
“Be it our charity hockey tournament or helping with the beer gardens at Spider Entertainment’s Cornstock, the caring community has always answered the call with both their wallets and their time, and we as an organization are thankful,” said Gouw.
