All Golden Suns teams on ice for AEHL action

It was a jam packed weekend of Alberta Hockey League action for the Taber Golden Suns as all four teams were on the ice.

U11

The U11 Suns finally got their 2024-25 campaign underway this weekend as they started with a two-game weekend. On Saturday afternoon, the Suns welcomed in the Central Alberta Selects. The Suns scored early and often as they cruised to a 13-5 win on home ice to begin the season. Nash Dyck led the way with five goals and two assists, Paxton Foote collected three goals and three assists, Blake Bryan scored a pair and had an assist, Boone Depew found the back of the net twice, Justice Luther had a goal and an assist, and Jayce Antal, Asher Skretting, Tommy Palaschack, and Bentley Dyck all had an assist. Rem Jardine was in net for Taber and made 17 saves on 22 shots.

After a big win to open the season, the U11 Suns were on the road on Sunday as they took on the Medicine Hat Hounds. In a role reversal, the Suns were the team outscored early and often in the second game as they fell 11-4. Foot had two of the Taber goals while Nash Dyck and Heston Honess had the others. Carter Wiest, Bryan, and Justice Luther each notched an assist. Tove Morgan made 28 saves on 39 shots in the Taber net.

The Suns wrap up October with two games this weekend. First up is a home date against the Wheatland Chiefs on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. On Sunday, they’re back on the road as they take on the Airdrie Lighting at 1:45 p.m.

U13

The U13 Golden Suns had another two-game weekend as they were after their first win of the young AEHL season. First up was a home game in Vauxhall against the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday night. Despite a close game until the third, the Suns were unable to find the back of the net as they were blanked 4-0 by the Hurricanes. Nash Stober made 39 saves on 43 shots as the starting netminder,

Saturday saw the Suns on the road to Medicine Hat to take on the Hounds. The Suns would jump out to a 3-0 lead thanks to two goals from Cooper Lutz and a single by Boston Constant. Travis Jackson, Blake Wenzel, and Jackson Wiest all collected an assist. The Hounds would respond with two of their own as the game went into the second period 3-2 in favour of Taber.

The Hounds would tie it up near the midway point of the period before Declan Okell regained the lead for Taber as Jackson notched his second assist of the game. With under a minute to go, Medicine Hat would find the back of the net twice as they took a 5-4 lead into the third period.

The Hounds would extend their lead to two just after the 11-minute mark but Constant would cut the lead to one on the powerplay. Jackson had another assist while Eli Robb had the other assist. The Hounds would add an empty netter with six seconds left in the game as they claimed a 7-5 victory on home ice. Drew Tame was the starter for Taber and made 22 saves on 28 shots.

Two more games come this weekend for Taber as they head to Okotoks on Saturday for a 5:15 p.m. game. The weekend finishes with a home game against the Central Alberta Selects on Sunday at 1 p.m.

U15

It was another weekend looking for their first win of the season for the U15s as they had two chances to get their first two points of the year against the East Kootenay Avalanche. Unfortunately for Taber, it just wasn’t their weekend as they were blanked in both games — 14-0 and 3-0. In game one, Jack Lukacs got the start for Taber and made 33 saves on 47 shots. In game two, Lukacs was back between the pipes and made 55 saves on 58 shots.

The Suns look to turn their season around this weekend with another two-pack of games. On Saturday night the Suns hit the road to take on the Wheatland Warriors at 7:30 p.m. Sunday sees the team back on home ice as the West Central Tigers are in Taber for a 3:30 p.m. puck drop.

U18

It was another rough weekend for the U18 Golden Suns as they had two more games. First up was a road Saturday game against the Lethbridge Hurricanes that resulted in an 11-1 win for the home team. Grayson Beigel had the lone Taber goal as Ryder Van Buskirk and Foster Weatherhead had the assists. Dagrin Bahr-Hemsing made 34 saves on 45 shots in the Taber net.

Sunday saw the Central Alberta Selects come to Taber to wrap up the weekend. The visitors would jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first before Tage Jensen got Taber on the board early in the second period. Blake Smith had the lone assist on the goal. The visitors would add another to make it 3-1 heading into the final frame. In the third, Maxx Davis would find the back of the net for the Suns, but the Selects would score two more times to make it a 5-2 final. Dakota Hurst was the starter for Taber and the netminder made 30 saves on 34 shots.

The U18 Suns wrap up October with a pair of home games. On Friday night, the East Kootenay Avalanche come to town for an 8:15 p.m. puck drop. On Saturday, the Okotoks Oilers are in Taber for an 8 p.m. game.
