W.R. Myers High School in Taber will be holding its Academic Awards Night Celebration at 7 p.m. tonight in the W.R. Myers High School gymnasium.

Maxine Schnoor, a teacher at W.R. Myers High School and coordinator of the Academic Awards Night celebration, says that the event is open to students and family members of the students.

Both students and family members, Schnoor says, will be able to celebrate the academic accomplishments that the school’s Grade 9 to 12 students achieved in their last school year, and enjoy the stage band perform two musical numbers at the halfway point of the event.

“I think it’s a wonderful evening where students of all different abilities get acknowledged for their many and varied accomplishments over the past school year,” said Schnoor.

On top of that, Schnoor says, the event will feature an announcement of a new and major scholarship and fundraising event.

“A former student wants to give back to the school by setting up a scholarship,” said Schnoor. “Each year we will award one or two students with a portion of the scholarship amount. We are investing the original donation, and donating the interest earned on it each year, thereby allowing us to continuously fund the scholarship for many years to come.  This is the largest single donation that we have ever received. The donator will be present at the event and will be speaking — explaining why they wanted to set this scholarship up as well as what they have accomplished since graduation. I think it is fantastic opportunity for our graduating students. Post-secondary studies are extremely expensive, and any help we can offer students in terms of financial assistance is great.”
