August 31, 1894 – Moose Jaw Times

A ship belonging to a well-known trader in the Southern Seas was carried a few miles inland by a large wave during the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883. It sits in dense jungle inland from the Port of Batavia and has become an object of curiosity to visitors.

Boston’s floating hospital is now making weekly trips with full passenger lists.

The King of Denmark, along with all his children, are enthusiastic cyclists. Several years ago, his health was delicate and he was thought to have a weak heart and a nervous system out of gear, but all the symptoms have disappeared since he took up cycling.

At present nearly every locality in Norway has its own local time, but the whole country will adopt a uniform time from Jan. 1 next. The mean time will be that of the meridian fifteen degrees east of Greenwich.

August 29, 1907 – The Frank Paper

The most successful tennis tournament was played at Coleman last Saturday between the tennis clubs of McLeod and Coleman. The visitors won by a narrow margin, although the last set could not be played due to the interference of rain. Coleman was playing fast and would likely have won the tournament had the rain not arrived.

During the hot weather last week, the flying ants did a thriving trade.

Last week, seven women made the hazardous climb up the Crows Nest Mountain, the Queen of the Rockies, which was first climbed only three years ago. The party left Coleman on Monday and camped overnight at the base of the mountain in the McLaren lumber camps. They made an early start on Tuesday and reached the summit by 2 p.m. that afternoon. While all members wore a rope for safety, none had need of it during the climb.

August 26, 1915 – The Alderson News

JM Caines of Tide Lake came into the newspaper office this morning and requested the inkslinger to come out and look at his wagon. Within it was the first load of 1915 grain to be unloaded in Alderson, making Caines the winner of a one year subscription to the News.

Last week John Dixon entertained his father, who resides in the Hat, and an uncle who is visiting from Owen Sound, ON. The elderly gentleman, aged 80 and 62, walked to Alderson from Medicine Hat and were amazed at the bumper crop at John’s place. The uncle took a sample back out east to show to all the doubting Thomases.

Building out at Jenner has been progressing steadily the past few weeks. Quite a city is springing up.

Wells are the coolest places to keep goods cool during the summer heat.
