This Small-Town Donut Shop Is So Popular That Even The Owner Was Shocked

Posted on May 22, 2024 by Britanny Burr

Canadians in particular have a reputation for being big donut fans, and while we don’t identify with all of the Canadian stereotypes, we’ll happily wear that one as a badge of honour. While we’ve all got our favourite spots for a delicious donut, there are some places that just stand apart from the rest. Some places, in fact, that people will drive hours to enjoy.

The Donut Man serves up some of the finest, most innovative, and mouth-watering home-baked goods you will find in the province. The family-owned, award-winning donut shop has perfected an old family recipe that has quickly become a fan favourite among donut lovers across Alberta. It’s the local gem of Crossfield, Alberta, but honestly, it’s the whole province’s claim to fame in the donut world.

Located at 1202 Railway Street, in Crossfield, approximately 45 minutes from downtown Calgary, and just off the QE2, The Donut Man is one charming bakery that mustn’t be overlooked.

With more than 30 available donut choices including Apple Pie to Lychee, beloved classics such as the Long John and Bismarck, and weekly Fritter varieties, these donuts are made fresh daily using a refined traditional family recipe, using natural ingredients, and an old-fashioned donut-making technique. If you’re not sure what to order, some fan-favourite flavours include the S’mores, Boston Cream, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Root Beer. But honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of the flavours, and it’s always a good idea to try out their seasonal creations.

Up before dawn, the baker works hard to ensure every batch of donuts is as fresh as possible. It’s handmade perfection that allows your tastebuds to indulge in a fluffy donut with the perfect blend of sweetness and crumble.

What’s more, It’s not just the smell of freshly baked donuts or the cozy, welcoming atmosphere that draws people in, it’s that staff that sets it apart. They are incredibly friendly, greet you with a smile, are passionate about their craft, and serve up every donut with genuine hospitality, making your experience a memorable one. While it may just be a little shop with a counter service and a handful of tables, it’s a destination in its own right. If you check out the reviews online, you’ll find that folks drive an hour, if not more, specifically to hit up The Donut Man.

This place is such a smash hit that the owner, James Blackwell, was even surprised. ““We didn’t expect to blow up like this. This is insane, but in the best way possible,” Blackwell said in an interview.

Although donuts are the true crowd-pleaser, The Donut Man also offers a variety of delicious baked goods and other treats, including pretzel buns, savoury Italian rolls, specialty cakes, milkshakes, and soft-serve ice cream to top the list. Customers rave about their mini cakes and pull-apart breads, too, so you better come hungry.

The Donut Man is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, Friday and Saturday until 8 p.m., and extended summer hours beginning May Long Weekend.

Head over to their website or social media for more information, and to place an order in advance!
