With school back in action, St. Mary’s School has seen the return of plenty of sports this fall. Since the start of school at the beginning of September, SMS has seen plenty of its student-athletes return to their sports of choice.

Looking at golf, SMS saw one of their own compete at the 1A ASAA South Zone golf championship and bring home a medal. Golfer Lyndon Kurviyal won the silver medal at Zones after a great round of golf. Kurviyal was tied for first after 18 holes of golf, shooting 76 and went to a three-hole playoff, where he ended up finishing 2nd. Kurviyal then travelled to Lloydminster to play at the 1A ASAA provincial championship on Sept. 25 and Sept. 26 with results unavailable before the press deadline.

Volleyball has also gotten underway at the school as both the Auroras and Celtics played in the Lethbridge College tournament earlier in September. The Auroras placed 6th on the Championship side while the Celtics won the consolation side of the tournament. The Auroras are playing in the Southern Alberta Interscholastic Administrative Council (SAIAC) league this year.

The Auroras suited up for their first league game on Sept. 12 at home against Magrath. The Auroras took the first set 25-20 before dropping the second 27-29. In the third set, the Auroras were unable to find a way to close out Magrath as they fell 22-25. The game would end in the fourth set as Magrath would close the game out with a 23-25 victory.

In their second game, the Auroras took on Catholic Central on the road. The Auroras would drop the first set in a close 25-23 battle. The second saw CCH edge out another victory, this time 25-21. The Auroras were undeterred though as they were able to claim the third set 25-23. With their backs against the wall yet again, SMS would also take set four with a 25-13 win. Looking to make it a huge comeback, the Auroras and CCH would head to a fifth and final set. Unfortunately for the Auroras, the visitors were able to carve out a 15-12 win and take the game.

The next action for the Auroras came on Sept. 26 when they took on Winston Churchill. Game results were unavailable before the press deadline.
