After a few years of COVID-19, sports took a back seat, but in 2022, local athletes were back out competing for their chance at glory. With the calendar flipped to 2023, let’s take a look back at all of the top sports stories of 2022.

January: Christmas is over and now Golden Suns teams are preparing for the second half of the South Central Alberta Hockey League schedule. The U13 Suns were back in action this past weekend with a lone game on tap as they welcomed in the Chestermere Lakers on Saturday afternoon.

As teams begin returning to the ice for the second half of the Central Alberta Hockey League schedule, several Taber Oil King teams have got their feet under them for the 2022 portion of the season. Two games were on tap for the U11 Tier 3 Oil Kings and the team took care of business as they collected two wins.

The past weekend was a successful one for ‘AA’ Golden Suns teams as they continue to climb their way up the standings in the South Central Alberta Hockey League. The U18 Suns took care of business this past weekend as they went undefeated in two games.

All three ‘AA’ Taber Golden Suns teams were on the ice this past weekend as the South Central Alberta Hockey League continues towards the end of January. Two games over the weekend resulted in two more wins for the U13 Golden Suns as they continue to rack up points.

February: The Taber Wham U16 volleyball team had a great start to their season this past weekend. They played in their first tournament for the season hosted by the Venom Volleyball Club from Medicine Hat.

For the first time in what seems like forever for Taber Gymnastics Club members, they were able to participate in a competition for the first time this season. Overall, 21 Taber gymnasts were at the club’s first competition since 2020 on the weekend of Jan.21-23 to compete at the Battle at the Bridge.

The St. Mary’s Celtics played St. Michaels from Bow Island on Monday night at the St. Mary gymnasium. The Celtics would wind up winning 77-5 with Joryn Rose leading the way with 16 points and Brendan Appleton scoring 12 points.

The St. Mary’s Auroras won the FP Walshe consolation final in mid-Febnuary after some stellar play across the tournament.

March: The 2021-22 school year saw the wrestling team start up again at W.R. Myers. After a few seasons of no wrestling team, the school saw a handful of students get back into the sport and the results were very successful by all accounts.

The W.R. Myers Rebels went 0-2 in Deep South league play last week, as the team gears up for the coming zone competition. It all started last Tuesday with a 90-86 loss at home to Stirling.
