Blake Hranac, municipal energy manager for the Town of Taber was recently honoured with the Energy Manager of the Year award presented by the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC). The position is a program of the MCCAC through funding provided by the Government of Alberta, and earlier this year after a review, they extended the funding for Hranac’s position into a second term.

The award was evaluated following some criteria, including total greenhouse gas emission savings to date, emission savings percentage relative to Taber’s emissions inventory, cost savings from both completed and in-progress projects, and the total number of projects completed to name a few. The MCCAC said Hranac had “made exceptional strides towards receding greenhouse gas emissions, achieving meaningful cost savings and implementing an energy-conscient culture.”

While Hranac won the award, town administration highlighted the fact it is important to recognize the team he has surrounding him as well. “With Blake as part of a talented team, the town is well-situated to make strides in reducing emissions and finding efficiencies for our municipality,” said CAO Derrin Thibault. “I would like to thank Blake and the entire Facilities maintenance crew as part of Public Works for their efforts in modernizing our technologies and our facilities.”

Hranac has completed many projects in his short time as the energy manager, with some being lighting retrofits in the Community Centre, Aquafun Centre, and the Public Works Shop. He has also had a hand in installing the combined heat and power units in the Aquafun Centre which saw massive savings of $40,000 a year and helped to reduce 136 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
