The Myers Rebels varsity rugby team traveled to Ross Sheppard in Edmonton for tournament play where the squad skunked its opposition, not surrendering a point in three total matches with a 5-0 win over McNally, a 20-0 victory over Jasper Place and a 41-0 blowout of host Ross Sheppard.
“To play three games in a couple of days is hard and credit goes not only to the girls, but the senior varsity coaches as well (Chris Komery, Greg Thompson and Shayla Anderson) in their preparation,” said Andrew Llewelyn-Jones, co-coach of the W.R. Myers Rebels girls rugby program. “The girls tackled well and their mauling game was excellent. One of the times they scored against Ross Sheppard, they mauled the ball almost half the field. Defensively, even with the 5-0 shutout of McNally, they were hardly in our half. It was a combination of first-game errors and us defending well where they did not offer an offensive threat at all. The defence was great all tournament long.”
Earlier in the week, both the junior varsity and varsity teams were victorious over County Central from Vulcan in league play at Ken McDonald memorial Sports Park last Wednesday.
The varsity squad earned a hard-fought 27-5 victory. Chelsea Hubble, Kara Passey, Kaela Lee, Caroline Steinborn and Sam Sorensen all scored tries with Megan Peleskey getting a conversion.
“Essentially it was a tight first half being tied 5-5 with good tackling on both sides. The second half Myers broke away and started scoring,” said Llewelyn-Jones. “The tackling, rucking and mauling was very good for us. A big strength of the senior varsity team is the rucking, mauling and tackling. Defensively they are very good which is why you don’t see teams score very many points against them up to this point anyway.”
The junior varsity tilt proved just as dominating as the Rebels won 46-12. The field opened up offensively as Vulcan could not field a full team.
“We had to play 10-versus-10 because they didn’t have the numbers like we did,” said Llewelyn-Jones.
Eight tries were scored with Genna Wright and Jazlyn Pedersen each scoring two. Single tries went to Brynn Skelly, Riley Bailey, Netanya Jeffrey and Paige Wood. Pedersen also scored three converts.
“It was tough having a lot of girls and getting in everyone to play. I just didn’t have the time and because they only had 10 players they also shortened the game,” said Llewelyn-Jones. “The running game of the JVs is excellent, they know how to run the ball. The forwards are learning and growing every game.”
This week both the junior varsity and varsity teams travel to Matthew Halton in Pincher Creek on Thursday followed by a junior varsity rugby tournament this weekend in Lethbridge at the U of L.
