Door delivery results in death

Posted on April 9, 2014 by Taber Times

A 65-year-old man is dead after a delivery of doors to Taber’s Home Hardware location went wrong.

It happened last Wednesday, and according to a spokesperson with Occupational Health and Safety, the investigation is still in its preliminary stages.

“A worker, a 65-year-old man, was delivering a pallet of doors from a flatbed truck,” said Brookes Merritt with OHS. “The pallet tipped over and pinned the worker against the truck.”

According to Merritt, the man was taken to Lethbridge Regional Hospital soon after.

“He was conscious for a while, but he later died from his injuries.”

Merritt confirmed the man was an employee of RSC Cartage Ltd.

He added the wheels are now in motion to determine exactly what happened, and what potential steps will need to be taken by Home Hardware as a result.

“OHS is investigating and orders are pending,” said Merritt, who detailed where the process will go from here. “We have up to two years less a day from when the incident occurred to handing the file over the justice to determine if charges will be filed.”

The Taber Police Service is also currently reviewing the file, as local police assisted in the investigation, along with OHS and the Medical Examiner’s Office.
