The Lethbridge Speed Skating Association, along with the Alberta Amateur Speed Skating Association and Speed Skating Canada, are set to host the Canada West Short Track Championships this weekend in which two Taberites will be competing.

The Lethbridge Speed Skating Club will be represented by Taber brothers Kaleb and Mason Muller, and Aaron Cooney, who earned spots on Team Alberta by competing in team trials in Lloydminster, Alberta in December and Calgary last month.

Held at Nicholas Sheran Arena Saturday and Sunday, the event will bring together the fastest 11-15 year-old speed skaters from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon and Northwest Territories.

The local organizing committee has announced national team member, World Cup medalist and Olympian Gilmore Junio will be the guest speaker at the welcome banquet at the Lethbridge Lodge on Friday. According to the committee, Gilmore’s display of sportsmanship and team spirit made him a natural choice to come and inspire the young athletes.
