On Seniors Night against Cardston, the Rebels girls dropped a 70-51 decision to Cardston Cougars.
“We got within four points of them a couple times but couldn’t keep the momentum going,” said Kenney Wood, head coach of the W.R. Myers Rebels varsity girls basketball team.
It made for a game later on in the week with little to play for in a 50-47 loss to Catholic Central Cougars.
“It was a very slow-paced game. Both teams just wanted to get it over with as the result for the game did not mean anything to our zone rankings,” said Wood.
“As I’ve mentioned numerous times throughout the season, we are getting scoring from everyone and these two games were nothing different. The team is playing well and I’m looking forward to this weekend.”
That weekend includes 3A girls zones at McCoy in which the Rebels have a first-round game against Eagle Butte on Friday afternoon.
“We are going into zones at pretty much 100 per cent, everyone is healthy and no injuries other than some bumps and bruises. We ended up third in our zone, which is what I was expecting. First and second came down to whomever won between Eagle butte and McCoy on this past Friday night in which McCoy won by 10,” said Wood.
The Rebels played Eagle Butte once before in late January and lost by 11 points after trailing by four at half-time.
“We did not play very well in that game. I was reviewing our stats and some of our players that have really become very consistent scoring and rebounding barely made the score/stat sheet that game,” said Wood.
“Eagle Butte has had one player all year that has proven to be their best player, so we will try and limit her touches for us. If Eagle Butte has been checking score sheets it will be difficult for them to key on just one of us.”
If you were betting man on who would emerge from the 3A girls zone tournament for a provincial berth, in which the south zone has qualified for three berths due to the quality of competition, it would be a hard bet to make.
“All five teams are ranked in the top 10 provincially. If anyone has a bad game they will get beat and if anyone has an above-average game they should win. This will make for some exciting basketball,” said Wood.
