The Rebels took their first game versus Grand Prairie Composite 70-36.
“We came out a bit sluggish and were losing 17-18 at the first quarter — I think the four and half hour bus ride could of had something to do with that — we had a great second quarter defensively and by the half we were up 33-20,” said coach Kenney Wood. “In the second half we just continued to get stronger and had the game well in control going into the fourth quarter 58-27.”
In the semi-final match, the Rebels were able to overcome Lindsay Thurber 68-55.
“Once again a bit of a slow start and we were only leading 14-12 after the first quarter, the second quarter was better, but were only up 40-32 at the half,” said Wood. “Third quarter we were up 55-43 and had the game in hand at that point.”
The championship game was a lower scoring affair, with the Rebels finishing strong for a 55-44 win over Archbishop McDonald.
“We had played them in December and beaten them quite easily, but that was a long time ago and I knew that we needed to play a strong game,” said Wood. “With that in mind we came out quickly to a 15-3 lead after the first, half time score was 26-16 — but we couldn’t seem to extend a lead. Third quarter we really struggled to score and were only up 38-33 going into the last quarter — finally got some shots to drop and were able to get back to a 10 point lead.”
Wood pointed to the team effort of the Rebels in contributing to the overall tournament win.
“I found out after the game that they (Archbishop McDonald) were missing three starters when we had played them in December. Once again it was a total team effort — each game different players are stepping up — defensively and offensively.”
In league play earlier this month versus the Winston Churchill Griffins, the Rebels dominated their opposition, pulling off an 81-41 win.
“Another great team effort — everyone has over the last few games really bought in on the team concept,” said Wood. “I continually tell them that we do not need to play above ourselves to win games and this was another example of this. We shot 38 per cent from the field, 33 per cent from the three point line and 60 per cent from the foul line. Nothing too spectacular, we just played a solid game. Hopefully we are going to continue on playing like this.”
