Over the years people have been buried at the Grassy Lake Cemetery, after which loved ones did not know the exact location, as no headstones were made.
“Previously we had these names etched into a rock, but the rock has eroded away and the names are becoming illegible. We would like to have a plaque made up with these names and attach it to said rock,” said Margaret Kast, vice president of the Grassy Lake Prairieview Cemetery Society, in correspondence with the M.D. of Taber.
The Grassy Lake committee asked for $3,000 for the project.
“Council has agreed to support the initiative to provide for a suitable memorial for the names of the individuals who were interred in the Grassy Lake cemetery,” said Derrick Krizsan, municipal administrator for the M.D. of Taber, in discussions after council’s Dec. 10 meeting.
The M.D. will also be sending a letter of support for the Vauxhall Cemetery Committee in its quest for a Community Facilities Enhancement Program (CFEP) grant.
“It includes the construction of ribbons for headstones as well as other improvements to the cemetery.”
“We’ve also dedicated some trees for landscaping for 2014 as well as landscaping, mowing and staff to go in there once a week to assist the cemetery society with maintenance,” said Krizsan.
