High-octane offence featured with midget ”AA” Golden Suns

Taber midget “AA” Golden Suns are ready to hit the ice this weekend to kick off its 2013-2014 South Central Alberta Hockey League season.

Going with 17 skaters and two goalies, it took a while for some numbers to file in for tryouts.

“Initially we started with 15 skaters, but over the course of two weeks we had some trickle down from “AAA” tryouts with six to eight guys come back from those camps,” said Jeremey Kenyon, who will be co-coaching the team along with Derek Wiest.

The numbers may have been small, but Kenyon sees some very big potential on the offensive side.

“It’s not an old team, it’s a semi-old team I guess with a lot of 16 year olds. We have a lot of talent up front. For our team to be successful, they are going to have to go into a work-hard mentality,” said Kenyon. “I like to see a hardworking, fast paced, in your face, all-out pressure game. I don’t like to sit back. I like to pressure the puck and create turnovers that way. We are going to be a team that goes after it.”

A new coach to the Taber Golden Suns program, Kenyon does not have much of a book on the rest of the league, but knows Lethbridge will be one of the stronger teams in the south division for his team to battle with.

“Lethbridge is going to be strong. We played them (Sunday) and they absolutely annihilated us, but that wasn’t our whole team playing. After that, I think we are right up there with anybody,” said Kenyon.

Taber midget “AA” Golden Suns kick off its regular season at home this Sunday with a 3:30 p.m. contest against the Red Deer Elks at the Taber arena.

“I have an expectation of being very competitive. If you look at our team, I see a lot of talent and a lot of scoring. If we work hard, we’ll be competitive with anybody,” said Kenyon. “It comes down to the players if they buy into that.”
