“It came down to outhitting them. When we talked to the opposition’s coach that’s what he said. What effected his boys was we ran hard, we hit hard and we came hard on every play and it overwhelmed them,” said Adam Hughes, head coach of the W.R. Myers Rebels football team. “That’s something our team does well and is something the coaching staff has been pushing is to outhit teams. We aren’t big, but we are fast. Fast hurts just as much as big.”
Adrian Tams, Blake Bullock, Nathan Bennett and Wyatt Fiedler scored the majors for the Rebels as Myers was able to control the line of scrimmage and gain big chunks of yards on its possessions. Bennett rambled for 180 yards and Dylan Tams churned out 47 yards at fullback.
“Our offensive line did a good job of tying up their defensive line and then their linebackers just couldn’t contain our running backs. It seemed every time our running backs got to the second level, they would break two or three tackles which was huge,” said Hughes.
The Rebels’ defence shutout the Wolverines’ offence with the opposition’s only major coming off an interception.
“It sounds too simple saying our speed, but we are always aggressively sending multiple people at the quarterback and overrun them. The success they all had was on passing and we were able to stop that in the second half by aggressively attacking the quarterback,” said Hughes.
W.R. Myers Rebels have its first league game of the season this Thursday against Winston Churchill at 7 p.m. at Ken McDonald Memorial Sports Park.
“They have a couple of real stars with their running back a real powerful guy. He’s been terrorizing opponents for a couple of years now. It will be a good match up,” said Hughes. “Winston is ranked in the province and we are really excited to see how we stack up against them. We are really happy with how we’ve started the season and this will be our first real test. If we can compete with them and beat them, then we belong in the talk of the top teams.”
